Professor David Adams' presentation was entitled “The Potential for Novel Treatments of PSC” is detailed in PSC News Issue 48 (March 2011). At the conclusion of the presentation, there was also a very informative Question and Answer session:
Q. Is there is a link with nicotine?
A. There is a link with nicotine - again this enzyme can be activated, not by nicotine, by factors within cigarette smoke, that’s slightly paradoxical - of course I am not really allowed to say this as a member of the medical profession but smoking does seem to have a protective effect in PSC as it does in some forms of Colitis.
Q. And is it something specific in wine or is it alcohol in general?
A. This is particular in red wine, one of the agents in wine.
Q. The food sources in wine rather than the alcohol.
A. Yes, so vodka will not do it
