Liver Transplant Guidelines

Overhaul and Update

PSC Support is working with top UK clinicians to overhaul the UK Liver Transplant Guidelines and we've emphasised the need for certain topics to be included, such as information for patients, immunosuppression regimes, psychological support, exercise, diet and nutrition before and after transplant. It will not be written and published until at least 2021.

Overview

In the meantime, check out this straightforward overview of liver transplant guidelines today. It's a big topic, and comes in two parts but is Open Access meaning you don't have to pay to read it.

Part 1

How and how to refer for liver transplant

Part 2

Organ allocation process, organ donation and organ type and how this influences the choice of recipient

Prehabilitation and Rehabilitation for Liver Transplant Patients

PSC Support is working with researchers and clinicians to drive changes to policy around care for transplant patients. Liver transplant patients need better psychological support, advice around fitness and exercise, and diet and nutrition, yet this is woefully lacking right now.

We raised the issue in 2019 and the British Liver Transplant Group stepped up to help move things forward.

Thank you to everyone who took part in our 2-week survey to understand views and experiences of liver transplant patients. It closed on 24th February and we'll publish our report in due course. We're using the findings to demonstrate the huge unmet need for liver transplant patients as we take steps to improve healthcare services for them. We are grateful to the transplant doctors who wholeheartedly support this vision and are working heard to effect change.
