Supercool Livers

Supercool livers for transplantation

With the demand for liver transplants ever-increasing, scientists are looking into new ways of increasing the number of suitable donor livers for use.

We have seen exciting developments over the past five years, including the recent NICE approval of machine perfusion and now, scientists from Harvard University have developed a new method of 'supercooling' human livers for donation. This method has the potential of tripling the time that a donor organ stays safe and viable during transportation from the donor to the recipient and therefore, increasing the number of liver transplants.
