Game changer for liver transplantation

Machine perfusion

Game changing news for people on the liver transplant waiting list

This week, NICE agreed that perfusion machines can be safely used in liver transplantation. PSC Support contributed to the government consultation on the use of machine perfusion on behalf of liver patients, the results of which (along with the science) led to the approval. This means we are a step closer to seeing machine perfusion in use in the NHS.

Martine Walmsley, Chair of Trustees for PSC Support, expressed her hope: 'Not only could the use of machine perfusion increase the pool of potential donor livers, but a knock-on effect could be shorter waiting times and better planned operations and resources, especially for patients living a long way from transplant centres. We should all be grateful to the people who took part in the research trials to evaluate machine perfusion. Without their contribution, we would not have the body of evidence we have today to support its use.'
